The Legend of Zelda is one of the most loved franchises in video game history. Many key locations appear in most, if not all games. However, some locations are unique to only a few games. All of these locations are important to maintain the storyline of the game alive and serve a specific purpose.

Key Details Up Front

The Legend of Zelda games exists in several different universes with different timelines. The locations are often similar, however, their purposes lie in the specific universe they are in. For example, Ganon’s Tower appears in most games but serves a different purpose depending on which game you’re playing.

Important Zelda Locations

These locations are the most vital to the Zelda universe. They appear in many different games and usually serve a large purpose.

Hyrule Castle

A castle that is usually located at the center of Hyrule. It houses Princess Zelda and is surrounded by Hyrule Field. Ganondorf often uses this as his base of operations or attempts to kidnap Zelda from here. A large number of the Legend of Zelda games take place in Hyrule Castle or just outside of it. The only games that don’t include Hyrule Castle are The Adventure of Link, Four Swords Adventures, and Tri Force Heroes.

Hyrule Field

The vast green planes that surround Hyrule Castle often serve as a barrier between locations. It’s filled with many different creatures such as Moblins, Stalchildren, and Poes. Many battles also take place here, most notably the final fight between Link and Ganon. This location exists in games that also include Hyrule Castle.

Lake Hylia

This lake is home to some of the key items in The Legend of Zelda universe. It’s often one of two or three places where the legendary Water Temple resides. This is also where you’ll find the first Great Fairy fountain as well as the first Fire Temple. Zora’s Domain is located at the bottom of Lake Hylia.

Hyrule Castle Town

Hyrule Castle Town is another important location that appears in several different games. It is usually the largest city in Hyrule and holds multiple shops, including a general store for potions and weapons, an inn for magic spells and health recovery, and a shop for rupees and other accessories.

Ganon’s Castle

The bosses of the game usually make their home in Ganon’s Castle. It can be found on Death Mountain or an island far off from the mainland of Hyrule. The entrance often requires some sort of item to break down a barrier, such as Light Arrows or Bombs. This location shares its name with the final dungeons in many games, but it’s typically located somewhere else.

Death Mountain / Spectacle Rock

Death Mountain is sometimes called Spectacle Rock. It’s often depicted as a volcano-like landmark that towers over Hyrule. Death Mountain appears in most games, however, it has different appearances depending on which game you’re playing. For example, The Adventure of Link has a large mountain with waterfalls on either side, while Ocarina of Time features a small volcano-like area.

It holds the Fire Temple and is home to multiple enemies such as Dodongos, Tektites, Lizalfos, and more. The Gorons also make their homes here along with the Fire Temple. In The Adventure of Link, this is also where the Hammer Bros. live and where you’ll find the Hero’s Cave.

Zora’s Domain

This location is usually found in the deep waters surrounding Hyrule Field and/or Lake Hylia. It is home to King Zora and the Zoras. It’s also where you will find many important items, such as Iron Boots and Fire Arrows. The Water Temple often resides in Zora’s Domain.

The Desert

This arid sandy climate is often difficult to navigate through. It’s filled with multiple enemies such as Armos and Lanmolas that will attack you on site. Most caves located in this area require the use of the Hookshot to get inside of them. The Desert is usually located far away from other major areas, but it has appeared in several games including A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Twilight Princess.

Kakariko Village

Appearing in most Zelda games, Kakariko Village is a quiet village located next to Death Mountain. It often has a windmill and houses many of the game’s characters. The location is usually peaceful, but it has been attacked multiple times in different games for various reasons.

The Lost Woods

This forest is filled with many challenges. It’s usually part of the critical path during the beginning parts of the game, but it becomes optional later on. The Lost Woods holds many hidden secrets, such as Master Sword in A Link to the Past and the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time.

Link’s House

While Link’s house isn’t typically one of the main locations, it has appeared in several games including Majora’s Mask and The Wind Waker. It is a simple small home with a bed and a table for cooking. In most cases, you won’t earn many items from exploring your own home, but some side quests have been known to appear there.

Key Locations in The Legend of Zelda

These locations are important to the gameplay of the first Zelda title, The Legend of Zelda.

Death Mountain

This large volcano is Link’s destination as part of the main quest in The Legend of Zelda. You must climb to its peak and defeat one of the guardians that rest there before you have a chance to face Gannon. Once you’ve successfully defeated the guardian, you’ll receive a Heart Container and be given a clue on where to head next.

Ganon’s Castle

Gannon’s Castle is where the majority of the final battles take place in The Legend of Zelda. It’s a large fortress with several floors and rooms to explore, as well as multiple areas outside of its walls that you need to pass through before entering it. This location is often guarded by one or more forms of Ganon or his minions.

Death Mountain Crater

This is the final dungeon location in The Legend of Zelda, located at the top of Death Mountain. It’s filled with many enemies and tough puzzles that you need to figure out before moving on. You’ll gain access to it once you’ve defeated one of the guardians at Death Mountain, and you’ll need to defeat Gannon to earn the final Master Sword.

Hyrule Castle

Hyrule Castle is where Zelda and her family reside and rule over the people of Hyrule. This location has appeared multiple times throughout many different games with small changes each time it’s shown. It’s filled with guards who are often protecting Hyrule’s Princess.

Hyrule Castle Town

This location has appeared in many different Zelda games, but it is usually where the majority of people live in Hyrule. It houses shops with helpful items and food to purchase, as well as other locations you’ll need to discover over time. An easy way to earn rupees is by playing mini-games in this location, and there is always something new to do here.

Link’s House

This small home is located next to Hyrule Castle and it belongs to Link. There aren’t many beneficial items earned at this location, but you may be able to participate in some side quests. Sometimes the Ocarina of Time will be left here as well, which you’ll need to progress through the main quest.

Mountain Cave

This location is located on Death Mountain and it holds a few of the game’s secrets that are required for Link to advance through his journey. It’s filled with many challenges and puzzles, but there won’t be any large battles until you reach the end of it.

Palace of Darkness

This is the final dungeon in The Legend of Zelda and it’s filled with many dark rooms and tough enemies. To complete this location, you’ll need to acquire several items and find your way through a deep maze. You’ll need all eight crystals to advance through this location and defeat Gannon.

Zelda’s Courtyard

This location is not a dungeon or an important area to any of Link’s quests, but it has appeared in various games over time. It has been featured as both a peaceful and dangerous place depending on the game, and you’ll often find either Zelda or Ganon at this location for one reason or another.

Key Locations in Breath of the Wild

Upon the release of this most recent Zelda title, it rose in popularity to surpass nearly all other Zelda games, with perhaps the exception of the original. Breath of the Wild offers a large open world for Link to explore, which includes several different areas. Each one contains its secrets and challenges, but some are more difficult to traverse than others.

Death Mountain

As in many other Zelda titles, Death Mountain is located in the northwestern corner of Hyrule. This game, it’s filled with an active volcano that’s constantly erupting. Link will need to climb the many ledges of Death Mountain if he wishes to reach the top, and there are plenty of enemies waiting for him each step of the way.

Gerudo Desert

The Gerudo Desert is located southeast of Hyrule Castle Town and it’s where you’ll find the Gerudo Tribe. This expansive sand-driven location is filled with objects to climb and enemies to battle, so it’s recommended you spend some time leveling up before trying to cross through it.

Hyrule Castle

As in many other Zelda games, Hyrule Castle sits just below Death Mountain and guards the land of Hyrule against danger. In Breath of the Wild, Link has a variety of ways he can attack Hyrule Castle and it changes based on whether Ganon has been defeated or not during his journey.

Lake Hylia

Located west of Hyrule Castle Town, Lake Hylia is full of water that extends nearly the entire distance across the map. It is usually surrounded by enemies who are trying to attack any traveler who comes too close, and it can be difficult to traverse at times. There is a large piece of land in the middle that contains the lake’s dungeon.

Lost Woods

Located south of Kakariko Village, this mysterious forest is very hard to navigate through if you don’t possess the proper items or skills. It has appeared in multiple Zelda games and it tends to house one or more pieces Link will need to acquire before continuing his quest. Make sure you check every inch of the Lost Woods as there are plenty of secrets hidden here.

Kakariko Village

This small town is located just west of Hyrule Castle and it houses many local citizens who live ordinary lives throughout the land. Some characters may ask you to complete quests for them, and there are plenty of merchants here that will allow you to spend your rupees on useful items.

Kakariko Graveyard

Just west of Kakariko Village you’ll find a large graveyard filled with spirits who wish to attack Link at every turn. This location is very important as it houses one of the main pieces needed to unlock further challenges in Breath of the Wild. There’s also a small shop located near the entrance if you need anything from the merchant.

Lanayru Mining Facility

This abandoned mining area is located just south of Lanayru Wetlands and is where Link can find plenty of useful items scattered across its many rooms. This is one of the strongest locations in Breath of the Wild as it contains multiple enemies who are willing to attack with little hesitation. You’ll need some high-level weapons before even attempting this location.

Mount Lanayru

This massive mountain is located just east of the Lanayru Mining Facility and serves as one of the game’s main dungeons along with Zora’s Domain. It contains many enemies, but defeating them is the only way to rid fog from its various rooms as well as open up new areas of the expansive mountain.

Zora’s Domain

Located north from Lanayru Wetlands and surrounded by an icy wall, this area can be frustrating at times due to its slippery floors and deadly water that will poison you instantly. It has multiple challenges that are home to some useful items as well as some new Zora armor pieces you won’t find elsewhere. It’s also home to King Dorephan who offers plenty of insight about events that happened 100 years ago during the Great Calamity.

Boko Baba Forest

This small forest is located just east from Gerudo Desert and houses Boko Babas, which are enemies known for their wooden spears and ability to jump around on all surfaces. This is one of the locations where you can find Hearty Durians if you need some extra health, but be prepared for a difficult fight against these enemies…they’ll make quick work out of Link at lower levels!

Gerudo Town

This large town is home to many Gerudo residents as well as merchants looking to make a living off folk willing to brave the harsh desert. It’s home to one of the game’s main bosses, Vah Naboris, so you’ll want to explore this location several times if you hope to take down the Divine Beast.

Hebra Mountains

This large mountain range is located just west of the Hebra Tower and holds plenty of surprises for Link. It’s filled with dangerous enemies that come in all shapes and sizes, but defeating them will reward you with helpful items or even some rare gems that can be traded for rupees at a nearby village. Make sure to explore this massive area carefully…there are lots of things hiding out here!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Locations

These locations are important to the gameplay of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Golgotha Cemetery

This doesn’t have any direct impact on the game itself, but it’s a place that has appeared in many other games as well. It’s usually where special items or other important objects are found. It’s normally guarded by some kind of enemy and defeating it will allow you to claim the location’s treasure.

Hyrule Field

This is a large area that runs through the center of Hyrule. It connects to all of the locations seen throughout this game, including Death Mountain, the Lost Woods, Lon Lon Ranch, and more. It’s a dangerous place because it’s filled with enemies who want to attack you without warning.

Hyrule Castle

This is where people live in Hyrule and many important events take place here as well. Link exits from this location at the beginning of his adventure due to Princess Zelda’s plea for help. It’s filled with many guards who’d like nothing more than to keep you from making progress.

Kakariko Village

This is a small village that has appeared in several games, and it usually houses the majority of people living in Hyrule. The name of this town comes from the word “redeemed”, which is an ironic term given that it’s sometimes filled with danger.

Lost Woods

This area has appeared in many games throughout the series, and it houses numerous secrets. It becomes a maze you’ll need to navigate through so you can find your way out of this location. Items are waiting for you at the end of the maze, which you’ll need to advance in the game.

Lake Hylia

This area has appeared in several titles throughout the series, and it is where many different quests take place. While it’s mostly calm, there are times when enemies will appear for you to defeat before they cause any damage. It houses a variety of secrets as well, which you’ll need to find if you want to complete the game.

Forest Temple

This is one of the dungeons that need to be completed for Link to advance through his journey. It’s located within the Lost Woods and the puzzles are many, but they’re simple enough for anyone with experience playing Zelda games to complete.

Gerudo Valley

This is another small village that appears in several games throughout the series. It’s filled with people who are thieves, which often makes the village full of danger for anyone not familiar with it. There are some secrets hidden here though, including a way to progress through the main quest without any problems.

Fire Temple

This is one of the many dungeons that Link must visit to advance through Zelda Ocarina of Time. Spirit Temple

Temple of Time

This location is important in Zelda games because it houses Master Sword, which is what Link uses to defeat Ganondorf in this game.
