Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a lot of new, unique features and interesting side quests. Two of these quests involve baking a desert referred to as a Monster Cake. These unique cakes have special effects on the people who eat them.

But where do you find the recipe? And where do you get the ingredients needed to make a Monster Cake?

Read our guide and we’ll tell you all about it.

Key Details Up Front

While you explore the ins and outs of Hyrule, you’ll come across a few quests that ask for Monster Cakes. Getting the ingredients for these cakes isn’t easy, but you may wind up exploring areas of the map you have yet to visit. Whether it’s delivering dessert for a connoisseur or helping out a family in need, Monster Cakes will get the job done.

What is a Monster Cake?

If you’ve played Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and haven’t heard of Monster Cake, what are you even doing? A Monster Cake is a dessert Link can create given the right ingredients. These ingredients are then cooked together in a Cooking Pot. While most of the ingredients in this unique dessert are what you would typically find in a cake, the outlier is the Monster Extract.

With Monster Extract, the duration and strength of any effects of the cake are randomized. That said, once someone has a taste of the delicious Monster Cake, they’ll never forget how sweet and moist it is.

Where to Find the Monster Cake Recipe

Monster Cake Guide

The Monster Cake recipe can be difficult to find. Lucky for you, we’ve got your back. We’ll give you the recipe in a bit, but if you want to find it for yourself, just head to Hyrule Castle. There are a few recipe books found in the Library.

This recipe for Monster Cake is described as “a secret recipe of the Royal Family of Hyrule.” However, the recipe comes with a caveat. It also says that consuming Monster Cake can “make one’s head fuzzy” and “motivate someone to plan evil schemes.”

Monster Cake Quests

There are two quests you can complete using Monster Cake. “A Royal Recipe” and “A Parent’s Love” are both side quests Link can accept. While the reward for finishing each quest is money, if you want to 100% Breath of the Wild, you’ll have to finish them.

A Royal Recipe

To kick off this quest, Link needs to head to Riverside Stable and speak with Gotter. When you do, he will tell you about his ancestor who was a chef for Hyrule’s Royal Family. He’ll explain that he wishes to partake in just one of the recipes that his ancestor cooked for the Royal Family of Hyrule.

Gotter is also kind enough to tell you the recipes are located in Hyrule Caste in the Library. There you can read the recipe books and find the recipes for both Monster Cake and Fruit Cake. Once Link gets the recipes and returns to Gotter, he’ll ask him to make either of the recipes for him.

It doesn’t matter which cake you make for Gotter as either one will complete the quest. Speak to Gotter with either a Monster Cake or a Fruitcake in Link’s inventory and Gotter will ask if he can have a bite. If both cakes are available, Gotter will ask for the Fruitcake.

Once he has the Monster Cake or Fruitcake in his possession, Gotter will take a bite and begin describing how it tastes to you. Initially, he says taking a bite out of the cake is akin to eating a Chuchu. Then Gotter realizes something like that would be dangerous and disgusting and changes tactics. Next, he says it’s like a Hinox pummeling on your brain.

Finally, he’ll just tell Link how elegant and delicious that cake is and explain that he never thought he’d have the opportunity to taste something so amazing and wonderful. When he’s done eating the cake, Gotter will give Link an emphatic thank you and reward him with a Silver Rupee, worth 100 Rupees. Congratulations! The quest is complete!

One thing to note is that if Link presents Gotter with both a Monser Cake and a Fruitcake, he’ll get a Silver Rupee for each.

A Parent’s Love

The second Monster Cake quest is A Parent’s Love, which you can’t start until you build up Tarrey Town. Located in the Akkala Region of Hyrule, From the Ground Up is a quest that requires helping workers build a town.

Once you finish From the Ground Up, Link can listen in on a conversation between Hagie and Ruli. You’ll find them in their home at night in Tarrey Town. Ruli is complaining that Hunnie, the couple’s daughter, is sick. It seems that the only food Hunnie will eat is cake and wonders aloud if there’s anything they can do.

As the couple continues their conversation, it becomes clear that no matter what type of cake they give their daughter, it doesn’t seem to satiate her hunger. Ruli says that she would “sell her soul to a monster” if she were able to find a cake that would cure their daughter.

Overhearing this conversation starts the “A Parent’s Love” side quest. Just like with the “Royal Recipe” quest, you can find the recipe for Monster Cake in the Hyrule Castle Library.

Gather the necessary ingredients, then find a pot to cook in and bake yourself a Monster Cake. Once it’s ready, take it to Ruli and she’ll give it to her daughter. First, however, she’ll comment on its pungent odor. Choosing to take a chance, she hands the cake over to her daughter, hoping it will heal her.

Hunnie eats the cake straight away and begins running around and playing like her old self. Ruli will express her gratitude to Link, pointing out that her health has returned to normal. As a sign of her thanks, she rewards Link with a Gold Rupee worth 300 Rupees. Not too shabby!

This is what you’ve been waiting for. Here are the ingredients for cooking a Monster Cake, along with where you can find them.

You need:

  • Cane sugar
  • Tabantha wheat
  • Goat butter
  • Monster extract

That’s it. Just those four ingredients. Cook them together in a cooking pot and you’ll have yourself a Monster Cake in no time.

Where to Find the Ingredients

If you’ve found Kilton outside one of the villages at night, you can buy Monster extract from him. It will cost you nine Mon, so make sure you have that much or have enough monster parts to sell him in exchange for the Mon you need.

The rest of the ingredients you can purchase at the Slippery Falcon located in Rito Village. Every ingredient sells for 12 Rupees, so make sure you have the necessary funds. If you don’t, at least make sure you have enough items to sell so you can purchase the ingredients from the merchant.
